ENEMIES OF EXPECTANCY Mark 13:1-13

A general outline of the chapter:

I. v.1-4 = BEWARE OF DISTRACTION = A. MONEY B. PLEASURE C. Church Bldgs. etc. D. Hand to plow II. v.5-6 = BEWARE OF DECEPTION = A. FALSE TEACHERS [Mt. 24:23-28] B. SIGNS AND WONDERS [DT. 13] C. So deception, false teachers, and false doctrine is a danger that threatens our expectancy of Christ’s return. What can we do? One of the central doctrines of the Christian faith is the return of Jesus Christ.

Our Lord Jesus often spoke of His return and our future existence.

Mark 1:15 = Kingdom of Heaven coming 8:38 = He comes 9:41 = Rewards in future 9:43,45,47 = Punishment future 10:14 = Kingdom of God 10:30 = Age to come 12:26 = Dead rise

SO JESUS CHRIST SPOKE OFTEN ABOUT HIS RETURN.

HE WANTS IT TOBE CENTRAL IN OUR LIVES.

1. Lk 17:26-27 = Noah’s neighbors were so busy in the present that they missed the future.

2. 2 Th 2:1-2; 3:1-6-15 = Thessalonian Christians were so busy with the future they missed the present.

3. Rev 2:8-11 = Smyrniots were alert to both the present and the future…

Now, Ch. 13 is an entire chapter about the future with the theme of “being alert” to Christ’s return.

Remember – Jesus states 4 enemies of expectancy. 4 attacks we must guard against.
APOSTATES [JUDE ] APOSTATES [ II PETER] FALSE TEACHERS [MT 24] SIGNS AND WONDERS [DT 13] Remember that miracles are not a proof of divine calling and approval, only the word of God is the final test. See deut. 13:1-5 and i john 4:1-8. 4. v. 9-13 = BEWARE OF DEFECTION

STORY OF STAMS DESTINED FOR SUFFERING [I TH 3:3-4] DON’T BE SURPRISED [I P 4:12-19] ALL GODLY WILL SUFFER [II TIM 3:12] BLESSED WHEN REVILED [MT 5:11-12]
5. v. 14-37 = BE ALERT

Watch”-there are two different greek words.  First is negative ‘don’t sleep or be sleepless’.  Second is positive ‘be wide awake’ as in a marketplace surrounded by opportunity…paul uses this in the sense of buying up the time.

FINALLY: 1. v 14-23 = WATCHING IS MAINTAINING Peacefulness During Uncertainty and Suffering 2. v. 24-33 = WATCHING IS MAINTAINING Work in Ministry for the Kingdom of God… 3. v. 34-36 = WATCHING IS MAINTAINING Loyalty to our Master at all times… 4. v. 37 = WATCHING IS MAINTAINING our Focus of Life always on His Purposes…

BE ALERT TO GOD WHY?

1. v. 14-19 = because He predicts awful days

2. v. 20-32 = Because He protects all His own…
