AMERICA’S THREE BEST SELLING DRUGS ARE FOR—HYPERTENSION, ULCERS & TRANQUILIZERS
The three best-selling drugs, in the United States last year were, a hypertension drug, a medication for ulcers and a tranquilizer. These pain mufflers are readily available because even the medical profession seems to look upon pain as the illness, than rather, what it truly is, the symptom of the illness. Listen to this interesting note, in Italy for 30 year under the Borges, they had warfare, they had terror, they had murder, there was blood running in the streets. But that society, in those years, produced Michelangelo, Leonardo, and the Renaissance. Listen closely; in Switzerland they had brotherly love and 500 years of peace and democracy and what did that produce, the cuckoo clock. Think about the greatest production, comes through our times of most intense suffering. Bonnie and I look back over the years in our life that were the most difficult in ministry and in our struggles and in the accommodations and everything else and those were some of the richest and the productive years of ministry, because God, His grace is sufficient.

Saint Augustine once said in his confessions, what is it therefore, that goes on within the souls, since it takes great delight if things that it loves are found or restored, to [xx] always been possessed by them. What Augustine said is, that when we suffer and when things are taken away or when we find something dear to us that is slipping from our life, our affections are endeared to that and it becomes so much more precious. You know what he means? A lot of times we love people more after they are gone, than while we have them. We reminisce on the children, when they get married, we reminisce on the parents, when they are gone. We reminisce on the old friendships, when they are passed.

What he is saying is that in the struggle of life, we need to let those affections be there and as Augustine continues, the storm [xx] is about them, as they’re threatened with shipwreck, real pale at their coming death but when the sky and the sea become calm, they exalt exceedingly because of the greatness of their deliverance. You know what that means? It means when everything is calm and life is gentle to us, we don’t have as much reason to cling to the one, that will bring us through the storms. But when He brings the storms, and He rocks our boat He makes us reach out to Him. And we should be reaching out to Him through our storms Augustine says.
