Psalm 19:8a

Psalm 19:8 The statutes [or directions] of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: (KJV)

“God’s directions are the only way to make it to happiness now and forever!!”  God has given guidelines for life. What happens if you miss them?

  • Have you ever been lost as you travel? That’s a memory
  • But, to be going the wrong way and unable to turn back… That’s a horror
  • And, to not even know it That’s utter doom.

Jesus often warned of this spiritual condition. He called it lostness. Being lost or DOOMED is not following His directions.

  1. doomed ones get thrown into the fire. Look with me at Matthew 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. (KJV)  Matthew 7:21     Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. (KJV)   Here are religious people. Involved in ministry. Helping others and knowing about the Lord. But, they are cast out!
  2. doomed ones get cast into outer darkness. Now look at Matthew 8:11-12 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (KJV) Here are people coming in to share in a banquet. They are convinced that they are invited and should be there. But they are found to have neglected the only requirement a wedding garment. As only those clothed with Christ enter heaven, so only those clothed in a wedding garment enter the feast in this story. Are you wearing Christ’s righteousness or your own? Its not religion, its not church, its not rituals performed (baptism, confirmation, walking an aisle, praying a prayer) It is only the sacrifice of Jesus alone. Self righteous, good works can save no one. Hypocrites on the inside, beware. God will not let you in. There will be horror, shock, dismay and GNASHING!
  3. doomed ones still have sin blackened hearts. (Perreti in Oath pictures sin as an oozing black sore than smelled foul to all but the one with the sore.) Now look at Matthew 13:36 Then Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. (KJV) Here Jesus warns that the Kingdom will be sown with fakes by Satan. Side by side growing in the field are look alikes 2215 zizanion {dziz-an’-ee-on} AV – tares 8; 8 a kind of darnel, resembling wheat except the grains are black.  Wow! They are the same except one is black on the inside the other white. What a picture of salvation. Are you washed, in the blood . . .
  4. doomed ones will someday weep and gnash their teeth after it is too late. Now look at Matthew 22:13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (KJV) Again, someone crashing the party. Only those with reservations get to heaven. Have you got yours? Don’t leave here today without them!
  5. doomed ones look okay on the outside. Finally, Matthew 25:30 And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. (KJV) Here is one who made it all the way. Always looked right. But, no fruit! Thus, lost! Remember Jesus said He would keep His own. John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. (KJV)

A modern version of this would be from Alfred Hitchcock, master or horror, directed a brief scene he called – ‘Permanent Escape”.

The scene is wealthy man in a Latin American prison; he makes a deal with the prison undertaker to be nailed in a coffin, taken outside and put in the cemetery where the undertaker would rescue him and they would share his wealth; so nailed in coffin and buried and, in the same 6 foot trench a box in lowered with an unforgettable flash of a familiar face, the undertaker  BURIED ALIVE – WHAT HORROR, WHAT UTTER DOOM – NO ESCAPE.  But wait, there’s something far more horrible.  Let me share the last chapter of life for some people you have possibly heard of:

Where is Happiness to be found?

  1. Not In Unbelief.
    1. The witty Frenchman, Voltaire, was an infidel of the most pronounced type. He wrote:  “I wish I had never been born.”
    2. The nurse that stood by him in the end said he called for help and forgiveness to no avail — she said never again for all the money in the world.
  2. Not In Pleasure
    1. Lord Byron lived a life of pleasure if any one did. He wrote: “The worm, the canker, and the grief are mine alone.”
  • Not In Money
    1. Jay Gould, the American millionaire, had plenty of that. When dying he is reported to have said:
    2. “I suppose I am the most miserable devil on earth.”
  1. Not In Position And Fame
    1. English politician Lord Beaconsfield enjoyed more than his share of both. He wrote:
    2. “Youth is a mistake, manhood a struggle, old age a regret.”

Thus they all agree:  Voltaire, the literary infidel; Byron, the pleasure-loving poet; Gould, the multi-millionaire; Beaconsfield, the famous politician.  One and all they confirm Solomon’s verdict, though long centuries have rolled by since that Eastern potentate penned the words:

“All is vanity and vexation of spirit” (Eccl. 2:17).

Happiness is to be found in none of these things.  Where, then is it to be found? The answer is simple: In Christ Alone

The Lord Jesus said, “I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you” (John 16:22).

How do those apart from Christ die?

You see there was a safe spot in that plane.

A shelter where no twisted wreckage could permanently harm.

A haven that no crushing impact could erase.

Andy knew and shared the Divine Directions.

“God’s directions are the only way to make it to happiness now and forever!!”

He knew how to escape the plane before it was too late for eternity.

Do you know those directions?

Are you following them?

Have you shared them lately?

  1. The Divine Teacher Psalm 19:7 The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: LEADS US TO
  2. The Divine Witness the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. (KJV) WHICH GIVES US
  3. THE DIVINE DIRECTIONS: The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart. God’s statutes giving directions to only secure place in the universe

Let’s dig in and see the first half of this verse.

The Statutes Always translated precepts  4, 15, 27, 40, 45, 56, 63….etc.  Always accompanied by words of positive action such as:

keep also (v. 63, 56, 100, 134, 168) Psalm 119:4     Thou hast commanded us to keep thy precepts diligently. (KJV)

meditate (v. 78) Psalm 119:15 I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. (KJV)

longed Psalm 119:40     Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. (KJV)

forsook not Psalm 119:87 They had almost consumed me upon earth; but I forsook not thy precepts. (KJV)

never forget    (v. 141) Psalm 119:93     I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me. (KJV)

sought Psalm 119:94     I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts. (KJV)

erred not Psalm 119:110 The wicked have laid a snare for me: yet I erred not from thy precepts. (KJV)

esteemed Psalm 119:128 Therefore I esteem all thy precepts concerning all things to be right; and I hate every false way. (KJV)

love Psalm 119:159     Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. (KJV)

chosen Psalm 119:173     Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. (KJV)

Catch this: this word precepts and the verb it stems from speaks of “a definite accounting”

      1. something counted has an assigned number for each item
      2. troops mustered are seen to be present, etc.
      3. so negatively one unaccounted for is missing, empty, wanting

So, what’s that to Ps. 19:8? God has met with man to give His accounting of all that matters in life and life to come! His precepts or directions.  So, the directions of the Lord or divine directions are… “right” – literally straight, or correct path, laying out right track.  See the idea:  God’s account of things is the straight road to our true goal! Stay with me:

God’s divine directions or precepts are right. Now, “rejoicing the heart”, literally: “delight and pleasure to inner being”.

    1. Let me quote the eminent Hebrew team K&D: “their educative guidance, taking one as it were by the hand, frees from all tottering, joyous (in) conscious of being headed toward the right goal.”
    2. Well — that says it all. “God’s directions are the only way to make it to happiness now and forever!!”

So, what should we do?

Only one thing to do if you have perfect and straight directions from God to the true and only goal of life!! Follow them!

  1. read His Directions 17:19; Isa. 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

  4. trust His Directions 1 Thessalonians 2:13     For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe. (KJV)

  7. treasure His Directions Deuteronomy 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: (KJV), Deuteronomy 11:18     Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. (KJV)
  8. teach His Directions to children and talked of them continually    Deuteronomy 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (KJV); Deuteronomy 11:19 And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. (KJV); 2 Chronicles 17:9 And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people. (KJV); Nehemiah 8: 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. (KJV)
  9. protect His Directions 2 Corinthians 4:2 But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. (KJV)
  10. obey His Directions Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: (KJV), Luke 11:28 But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. (KJV); James 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (KJV)
  11. follow His Directions Matthew 4:4  But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God  7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.  10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. (KJV) Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: (KJV)
  12. love His Directions Psalm 119:97  O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day. (KJV), Psalm 119:113     I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love. (KJV), Psalm 119:159     Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. (KJV), Psalm 119:167     My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. (KJV)
  13. delight in His Directions Psalm 1:2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. (KJV)
  14. taste His Directions Psalm 119:103     How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (KJV)
  15. His Directions should be esteem, above all things, Job 23:12 Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. (KJV)
  16. internalize His Directions Psalm 119:11     Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. (KJV)
