Foundations For Sanctification

1 Biblical Counselors are First Called to Be Personal, Daily Followers of Christ

Discipleship/Counseling 101

Week 5

2  What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical Counseling is Supernatural: God does the work through the Word.

Counseling is not a technique: it is a chosen way of life, of walking in the light and truth.

Biblical Counseling is Personal Sanctification: we must first learn to deal with the flesh in our own lives; so we confess imperfection.

Biblical Counseling is Personal Discipleship: we are explaining how to be followers of Christ, like we are.

3  Month Two/Week-2

Everyone should be reading the syllabus, looking up verses as you read, and working on the memory verses. We should all be through 40% of this second lesson by next week. That means page 4 of the Student Workbook, and Tuesday of the daily devotions.

Each day we should devotionally mine for gold one of the passages, doing the Summary/Lessons/Application model.

4   3×5 Quiz

Print your Name, number 1 through 4, then write yes or no, on the four G.R.O.W. statements “I am by God’s Grace…”: G: Getting into the Word each day.

R: Reaching out for help to God in prayer.

O: Opening my life to the sanctifying work of the Spirit.

W: Willingly opening the Word to others.

Then add any shared Prayer Requests.

5 Lesson One Theme 19a: God Enables you to take the first steps towards lasting Biblical change. This step is your response to God’s demonstrated love for you in Christ Jesus.

John 1:12 – Salvation makes us sons & daughters of God; John 3:16-21 – Saved people come to the light to be exposed by the Word;

Romans 5:8 – Christ only died for sinners

II Cor. 5:17 – The key to salvation’s fresh start is being in Christ;

Ephesians 2:8-9 – By grace we are wired for good works;

I John 4:10 – God loves us so much He sent the remedy for our sins.

6   Principle-1 page 19b: God’s Plan for you to change in a Biblical way centers on His Son , Jesus Christ.

  • Because God’s standard is one of perfection (Lev. 19:2; Mt. 5:48), you cannot meet it by your own efforts (Psalm 143:2, Ecc. 7:20; Rom. 3:23).
  • You cannot save yourself (Prov. 20:9)…
  • You need to recognize (Isaiah 64:6)…
  • By God’s grace (John 3:16, 36)…

7  Lesson Two Theme p.  31a

  • After you receive salvation by God’s grace through our Lord Jesus Christ, your growth in Christ and fitness to help others Biblically will be in proportion to your faithfulness in Biblically examining yourself and applying God’s truths to your

8   Scriptures on Personal Sanctification

Mat. 7:1-5 – disciples check for personal sins; Rom. 12:1-2 – disciples surrender daily;

I Cor. 11:31 – disciples say no to personal sins;

Gal. 6:1-5 – KEY LESSON: The Attitude of the Discipler; Hebrews 5:12-14 – disciples need personal exercise;

I John 1:8-9 – disciples seek regular cleansing.

9  p. 31b: Principle-2

Establish Biblical Patterns

You are to be ROOTED, built up, and established in the Lord Jesus Christ and are NOT to be conformed to the world (Rom. 12:1-2; Col. 2:6-10).

You must PRACTICE God’s Word to grow into maturity

(Mt. 7:24-27; II Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 5:12-14; Jam. 1:22-25; I Pet. 2:2; II Peter 1:4-11; I Jn. 2:5).

10   S.L.A. Study on Romans 12:1-2: The Daily Surrender of a Disciple/Follower of Christ

SUMMARY: The entire first 11 chapters of Romans are applied starting with these verses. There are two imperatives.

I CAN DECIDE TO LET GO: v.1 “present” is in the aorist tense and means a final action, we go back to and remember.

I MUST DIE DAILY: v. 1 “living sacrifice” this is a present active verb. This means I renew this once and for all decision, all day long, as I go through life. Tied to the altar daily.

MY LIFE MATTERS TO GOD: v. 1 “holy and acceptable” explains what flavor God wants  in our lives: “holy” and the goal of life is driven by loving Him so much we want to please Him “acceptable to God”.

11   S.L.A. Study on Romans 12:1-2: The Daily Surrender of a Disciple/Follower of Christ

MY FIRST CHOICE: v. 2 “do not be conformed” this is the first imperative application in this section of Romans that applies truth to the lives of believers. This word means: God doesn’t want our lives shaped by His enemy (the world).

MY LIFELONG GREAT TASK: v. 2 “be transformed” this is

the great word morphed. God explains that all transformation starts with a renewed mind (anakaino). The tense is present (constantly/ongoing) and passive (God does it to us) ana = back again; kaino = new; God resets our minds back to His Way by applying His Word to my life by His Spirit

GOD CONFIRMS HIS POWER IN ME: v. 2 “prove” this word dokimadzo means ‘proof after testing’. We will find the proof of God at work in us as we test out the “reset” button for our minds. Allow Him to renew us, and when He does, He proves Himself to us.

12   Applications from Hebrews 5:11-14: God’s Calling for Every One of Us is to Disciple Others

SUMMARY: God has revealed our calling in life, He wants us to grow up, get strong, and guide others walking with Him.

LESSONS: UNDERSTANDING THE SYMPTOMS OF SPIRITUAL IMMATURITY.  God illustrates the four key indicators of being spiritually immature that He has sketched out for us in this passage.

SYMPTOM-1: God’s Word is DULL to me, I don’t feel drawn to personal Bible study, corporate teaching in Sunday church services, or to LifeGroup teaching times (v. 11). The evidence of salvation is hunger for the Word, just not being able to get enough of it (I Peter 2:2).

SYMPTOM-2: Sharing the Word with others is nothing I’m INTERESTED in learning to do (v. 12). The sign of spiritual growth is learning truth that God’s Spirit prompts us to be so excited about, we want to share it with others.

SYMPTOM-3: My Spiritual Digestion System is Sick, I’m on a BABY-FOOD ONLY diet (v.13). This is when only pre- digested food works, I can’t read and find truth that feeds my soul, I need to buy a book, tape, go online, or

something other than prayerfully digging out treasures in the Word for feeding my soul.

SYMPTOM-4: I’ll put ANYTHING into my mouth (v.14).

Just like babies that have no discernment of what is dirty, dangerous, poisonous, and so on, this spiritually immature person watches, reads, and listens without any discernment or discretion. They are confused, unstable, and driven about by every wave of new, different, or false teaching that comes along.

13   Applications from Hebrews 5:11-14:

God’s Calling for Every One of Us is to Disciple Others Lord, I want to be a Disciple Maker/Biblical Counselor for Your Glory.

GOD HAS SHOWN ME MY CALLING IN LIFE: v. 12 God’s goal is that everyone of us in Christ’s Church become a disciple making teacher; but without obedient choices we stay as babies and don’t mature. This is daily living out Matthew 28:18-20.

PRACTICE IS REQUIRED: v. 13 spiritual growth is all tied to the in take and digestion of the Word. I need to discipline myself to never living a day without digesting my soul food from the Word of God (Mt. 4:4).

I WANT TO MATURE SPIRITUALLY: v. 14 “senses exercised” is an athletic image of training for competition. My full-age, spiritually mature  is not chronological, it is tied to my responding to God’s Word empowered by the Spirit (Jn. 17:17). Only time with God in His Word helps me discern what pleases Him, by my differentiating between good and evil in His sight.

14  Table Time

Discuss the two studies we went over tonight.
