WOTB-11 From the Cradle to the Cross-4 GALLICANTU

The Lord wants us to learn a lesson about Peter tonight.

The lesson is that God does not want to emphasize OUR FAILURES – He wants to emphasize HIS FORGIVENESS. That is the lesson of Gallicantu, the place where the rooster crowed twice after Peter had denied Christ thrice!

The place to begin this lesson is in Luke 22:31-34 And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.” 33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.” 34 Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Jesus the great High Priest, the One who stands before the Throne for us – Jesus knew what was going to happen in Peter’s future. And Jesus warned Peter that a spiritual battle was coming his way.

The word for shift is siniadzo and it means to shake hard in a sieve. It was an agricultural term for cleaning up the grain and getting rid of impurities. What we will begin to see tonight is the painful for needful testing, trying, and refining fires that had to purge Peter of his self-will, his pride, his selfsufficiency, and his self-reliance.

The good news is that we can read the ending first. It worked. Listen to his testimony at the end of his life:

1 Peter 1:6-7 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ,

Peter sins, Peter fails, and Peter repents and returns to Jesus. Any child of God can come back to Him. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

Simon Peter was as bad as Judas—he did not sell Him, but he denied Him. The difference between Judas and Peter is that Peter repented. Our Lord prayed that Peter’s faith would not fail.1

Why did Peter fail? The danger signs are like the trail of a tornado the day after – the debris is everywhere as he looked back. The Scriptures record 5 areas that were danger signs: 1. Peter was too loudly boasting – a sign of GIVING IN TO PRIDE! Mark 14.27-31. The evident sign of Peter’s pride was the way he 1McGee, J. Vernon, Thru the Bible with J. vehemently asserted his ability to stay true to Christ. As Paul said we must take while we are standing – lest we fall. And how he fell! 2. Peter was too sparingly praying – a sign of GIVING IN TO PRESUMPTION! Matthew 26.38. When we think we have all our t’s crossed and I’s dotted spiritually we so easily lapse into prayerlessness. It is such a dangerous condition to go through a day or an hour or even a moment without a conscious dependence upon the Lord. Peter was able to neglect the clear request of Christ to watch and pray. He slept and was prayer less. 3. Peter was too soundly sleeping — a sign of GIVING IN TO PRESUMPTION! Matthew 26.41. On that night of nights – the very night Jesus warned Peter about repeatedly, the night Jesus said watch and pray – Peter slept. What a sad testimony of being out of step with the savior, out of touch with what He was doing. 4. Peter was too hastily acting — a sign of GIVING IN TO PRESSURE Matthew 26.51 5. Peter was too distantly following — a sign of GIVING IN TO PRESSURE Mark 14.66-71
