OUR DAILY BREAD

MATTHEW 6:11

GIVE US DAILY BREAD (Only in Matt./Luke until 1930’s)

Of all the petitions in the Lord’s Prayer, this one seems most out of touch with overfed and indulgent America 1993. The idea goes with the words – SOMALIA or ETHIOPIA or INDIA…but to think in “DAILY BREAD TERMS” is a bit remote for us..

WRONG! This midpoint petition, number four of seven, is the BULL’S EYE. GOD WANTS YOU TO BE IN A LIFESUPPORT SYSTEM RELATIONSHIP TO HIM. He wants to foster IN US – DAILY DEPENDENCE ON HIM. (Phy. Bread – Today) (SP Bread – Tomorrow.)

The first three petitions have focused us GODWARD:

OUR (PERFECT AND UNFAILING) FATHER WHO ART IN HEAVEN. Why continually live like orphans, not knowing the Father?

1. THY NAME BE HALLOWED = REVERENCE 2. THY KINGDOM COME = SUBMISSION

CONCEPTS OF EATING: 1. Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life = Daily Life – Salvation 2. Banquet = Heaven – Most often concept. 3. Bread = Body Broken

Exodus 16 – MANNA: Personal gathering – obeyed specific rules – penalty-discipline

4. Thy will be done = obedience

These last four are focused manward: 5. Give us daily bread = trust 6. Forgive us as we are forgiving = love 7. Lead us not into temptation = hope 8. Deliver us from the evil one = faith

This petition is all about trust in three crucial relationships that god has opened to us:

1. Giver 2. Gift bread 3. Expansion ðour opposite natural 4. Limitðtoday “ “

1. Trust your father 2. Don’t trust in self 3. Love your family

I. First, trust god as father, let’s look at our “father who gives.” Only god as our father is the true giver.

A. GOD PROVIDES (Only God gives gifts, Satan only has bait – God is our portion – all else vain. THE FIRST PERSONAL PETITION IS FOR PHYSICAL THINGS. GOD KNOWS ALL ABOUT YOU. LOOK AT 6:25-34. Daniel 5:23 God is whose hand are your life breath and your ways….

B. GOD INVITES. He opens the way for us to ask for small things like “bread.” Remember Christ on earth? He cared for, listened to, stopped and invested in society’s insignificants: (The little people (kids), lame, lunatics, lepers and losers.) Any doubts He’ll have time for you? *Heb. 2:14-18; 4:15-16; 6:19; 7:16, 25.

C. GOD EXPECTS “daily” (only way to avoid anxiety) dependence. Why? Because he is the perfect giver. He gives: (Life Support System Relationship (John 15:5).

A. Because He is creator (John 1:2; I Cor. 4:7) B. Quietly, but expecting a response (Luke 17:17) C. Constantly (John 1:16) (grace upon grace). D. Consistently only good gifts (James 1:17) (every good and perfect). E. Delightfully bestowing what we don’t deserve (Luke 15:22) – (bring forth). F. Irrevocably because He’s changeless (Romans 11:29). G. Ultimately the gift of indestructible life (John 3:16).

II. SECONDLY, LET’S LOOK AT OUR FAMILY. THE “US/OUR” CONCEPT DESCRIBES. A. WE ARE RELATED TO ONE FATHER IF WE ARE IN CHRIST. B. WE ARE COMMITTED: 1. To be part of the family. Heb. 10:24-25. 2. To be a part of the answer. Js. 2:16 – if brother, sister destitute.

III. FINALLY, LET’S REMEMBER OUR FRAILTY AS SEEN IN “DAILY WORSHIP.”

A. WE ARE WARNED OF LEAVING GOD OUT OF OUR PLANS (LUKE 12:18) V.34. B. WE ARE INVITED TO PARTAKE OF ETERNAL BREAD: 1. BREAD OF TOMORROW = HEAVEN 2. BREAD OF THE PAST = CALVARY 3. BREAD OF TODAY = DAILY NEEDS
