The God who is Enough in TEMPTATION Job Part 2

God is revealed through four of His Divine names in this book. One of these names provides the key to our understanding of suffering. That name is His Name EL-SHADDAI: “The God who is ENOUGH”. He is the Almighty, the All Sufficient One. Of the 84x this word is in the Scriptures 43x are here in Job!

From an overview of Job we can see suffering from five perspectives: I. To Make us Aware of the Battle [COSMOLOGICAL VIEW] in the Prologue chapters 1-2 A. Satan’s Challenge 1. He has power over the NATIONS 1.13-15,17 2. He has power over NATURE 1.16,18-19 3. He has power over NATURAL MAN 2.7 B. God’s confidence 1. As to Job’s Testimony 1:8 a) UPWARD = blameless and upright b) INWARD = a man who fear God c) OUTWARD = and shuns evil 2. As to Job’s trials 1:20-22 a) He Worships God in woe v. 20 b) He Praises God in Pain v. 21 II. To Make us Aware of Sin [RATIONAL VIEW] recorded in the words of Job’s three friends in chapters 3-31 A. Suffering is the result of sin in ones life [4.7-9; 8.20] B. Submission and Confession produces Restoration [22.21-30] C. These men were wrong in their application but right in their theology. III. To Make us AWARE of the Brevity of LIFE [EXISTENTIAL
VIEW] recorded in the words of Job in chapters 3-31 A. Demonstrated [13.1-26] as he questions why he ever was born B. Discounted [19.23-27] as he affirms his relationship to God IV. To Make us AWARE that God Purges our Lives [PRACTICAL VIEW] recorded in the words of Elihu in chapters 32-37 A. Suffering Purifies Life [33.26; Rom 5.3; Js 1.2-5] B. Suffering Produces Humility [35.10-12; 37.24; Heb 12.6-11] V. To produce Confident Trust and Dependence upon El-Shaddai who is in Control [THEOLOGICAL VIEW] recorded in chapters 38-42. God is Creator and Controller A. What God doesn’t say: blame Satan, apologize for Job’s pain, praise his friends for their help Psalm 119.75 B. What God does say is: 1. His purposes are beyond Man as seen in Creation and Creatures [38-39] 2. God is the judge of what is right [40-41] 3. God honors loyalty in one’s relationship to Him [42]

It was August of 1988 when we most asked ourselves why God? Why us? We were in a van on the side of a mountain in the middle of a forest fire. sequoia National Park was burning, bears were crazed and attacking cars and all we had was a tire iron, a flash light, two infants and the orange glow of the fires . . .

I. To Make us Aware of the Battle A. Satan is our Adversary, as the Devil he slanders B. His Origin Isaiah 14.12-14 and ezek 28.12-17 C. His Defeat is Eph 6 two keys: word and prayer D. He is a lion I Peter 5.8-9 How long is your sword II. To Make us Aware of Sin

A. Sin cuts off our signal from God Psalm 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear [me]: (KJV) B. Sin grieves God the Holy spirit Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. (KJV) C. Sin Sickens unrepentant saints 1 Corinthians 11:27-30 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup. 29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body. 30 For this cause many [are] weak and sickly among you, and many sleep. (KJV) D. Sin Draws the Wrath of God Hebrews 12:5-6 And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: 6 For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. (KJV) E. Sin Kills persistently sinning saints Revelation 2:22-23 Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds. 23 And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works. (KJV)
